The Narrows

Sophia plays the cool and intelligent Kathy Popovich in this film based on Tim McLoughlin's novel "Heart of the Old Country."

Mike Manadoro (Kevin Zegers), a 19-year-old Brooklyn boy, is torn between two worlds: his Italian neighborhood roots, and the sophisticated world of Manhattan, where he has received a partial scholarship to study photography at NYU.

His father is too proud to allow Mike to attempt financial aid, but Mike's job at a local car service doesn't earn him enough to make up for the rest of the tuition himself. So he takes a job making deliveries for a local mob boss, which puts him in the position of balancing work, school and personal relationships. In fact, balancing his relationships may be the toughest part – he's promised to marry his longtime girlfriend Gina (Monica Keena) but finds himself drawn to the beautiful Kathy Popovich (Sophia Bush), whom he meets at NYU.

"The Narrows" is a suspenseful coming-of-age story about murder, love, and loyalty, set in Manhattan and the ethnic enclaves of South Brooklyn. Directed by François Velle from a screenplay by Tatiana Blackington, the film also stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Eddie Cahill. "The Narrows" was produced by Ami Armstrong, Tatiana Blackington, and Leslie Urdang, and premiered at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival. The film was released June 19, 2009.
